SUMMARY:

The region of Cariri Paraiba, marked by the Caatinga landscape framed by flagstones, has seen a growth in tourist activity in recent years driven, among many factors, by geomorphological, archaeological, cultural and natural attributes, by cinematographic productions, by handicrafts and gastronomy. Tourism presents itself, at least in terms of discourse, as an important vector for local development and improvement in the quality of life of communities. In 2017, Sebrae/PB launched the “Rota dos Lajedos” project, to promote activities such as geotourism, ecotourism and experiences with communities. However, tourism development requires an inclusive approach that involves the active participation of local communities in decision-making. In this area, there is a form of tourism, commonly known as Community-Based Tourism (TBC), which values participatory management and the role of local subjects as central agents in the processes of tourism development in their respective territories. Thus, with the intention of contributing to studies on the development of tourism in the Lajedos region of Cariri Paraiba, this research has the general objective of analyzing how the communities of Vila do Marinho, Ribeira and Bravo, located in Cariri Paraiba, are socially organized and integrated into the tourism production chain, revealing the factors that explain their different forms of community organization and proximity to the development of Community Based Tourism. Thus, this research is characterized as exploratory, descriptive and explanatory, with a qualitative analysis approach. Information will be collected in field work with the three target communities of the study, using two research techniques: participant observation, with immersion in the communities, and semi-structured interviews with community members and leaders and representatives of the public sector and private initiative involved with local tourism. The interest in the research started from the understanding of tourism as a multifaceted and complex social practice, which must be aligned with responsible practices and shared management, in which the focus must be on local subjects, who present different forms of organization, which implies different results generated for each community nucleus.
