RESUMO:

Tourism, as an economic alternative, has been considered as a relevant development tool, generating significant changes in the way of life of local populations, especially in tourist destinations on implementation and consolidation process. However, the activity generates a series of impacts, from the economic, social and environmental point of view, which implies the need for community participation to define policies and actions necessary for the implementation of the tourist activities in perspective. In this sense, this study aimed to investigate residents' perception of impacts, satisfaction with the place, governance and resident support to tourism development in Seridó Potiguar/RN, a tourist destination in the implantation and consolidation phase. In order to reach this objective, it was necessary to use the descriptive research, with a quantitative approach, in which questionnaires were applied with 220 residents in the locality of Currais Novos, one of the municipalities that are part of Polo Seridó. The used survey method was the hypothetical-deductive type. The data analysis technique used was descriptive and multivariate analysis techniques such as factorial analysis and correlation matrix. For the processing of the data of the questionnaires applied it was used SPSS 22.0 for Windows. Results show that interviewed residents believe in the positive benefits that can be generated by the development of tourism, especially in terms of increasing employment and income, and activity is only adding to the economic development of the region. Concerning the negative impacts perceived by residents, tourism development may increase the cost of living in the locality, as well as social problems, such as increased pollution in cities, increased noise in cities that damages environment and the increase in transit problems. It was observed a relative correlation between governance perception and support to the development of tourism in the region.
