SUMMARY:

The general objective of this thesis is to analyze the production of knowledge of the Social Service on the commodification of higher education in Brazil. And as specific objectives: to problematize the process of recognition of Social Service as an area of knowledge production; to identify the theoretical-methodological trends that guide the production of knowledge of Social Service about the commodification of higher education in Brazil; to analyze the implications of the knowledge produced by Social Service about the commodification of higher education in Brazil for the ethical-political project of the profession. The methodology adopted is based on the historical-critical-dialectical materialism method. We resorted to bibliographical research, documentary research, the State of Art technique, and a quanti-qualitative approach. The bibliographical research contemplated the study of critical authors who develop reflections about the structural crisis of capital, the configurations of Brazilian education, the mercantilization of higher education, and discussions pertinent to Social Work. In the documentary research, we carried out studies about: LDB/1996, statistical data from the 2017 to 2020 Higher Education Census, dissertations, theses, articles, CAPES/2017 quadrennial report, and the Social Service/2019 Area Document. We used the State of Art technique for mapping and analysis of the collected materials. In the research sample, 10 PPGSS were defined, which corresponds to 02 programs per region of Brazil. To identify the 19 dissertations, 09 theses and 05 articles published in Temporalis Journal, we used the following descriptors: mercantilization, higher education and Social Service, education policy. These investigated materials refer to the period from 2007 to the first semester of 2021. From the study it was possible to analyze the socioeconomic and political determinants of the structural crisis of capital, the socio-historical aspects of the Brazilian particularity, the deepening of mercantilization through the expansion of higher education in private HEIs (on-site or distance), the theoretical-critical maturing and the recognition of Social Service as an area of knowledge production. The results of the research revealed: the historical-dialectical materialism as a method of investigation object of analysis, the strengthening of the strategic hegemonic social direction and of the ethical-political project of Social Service, the ethical-political commitment to the struggle in defense of the interests of the working class, of the democratic principles and, of the policy of public, free and quality education. With this, we highlight the importance of the debate in Social Work, as an area of knowledge production, in the perspective of deepening the scientific investigations about the multiple faces of the mercantilization of higher education in times of structural crisis of capital.
