The object of the present research is to discuss the commodification of higher education, its relationship with distance learning (DL), and the formation of an irregular market for undergraduate courses.  The work is methodologically based on the historical and dialectical materialism method. As specific objectives, the process of mercantilization of Higher Education in Brazil and its particularity in the vocational training in Social Work; characterization and analysis of the extension and/or free courses offered in Social Work in the Northeastern region; apprehension and evaluation of the position of the CFESS-CRESS group and the actions and strategies developed in face of the illegal offer of extension and/or free courses. Regarding the Brazilian reality, it covered the expansion of higher education from the governments of Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002) to Jair Messias Bolsonaro (2019-), especially focused on the private sector and the expansion of vacancies through distance learning.  It also delved into the analysis of the repercussions of this market perspective for Social Work, vocational training, and the precariousness of teaching.
