SUMMARY:

This dissertation proposes to discuss the phenomenon of conservatism in the production of knowledge in Social Work and its repercussions on the hegemonic social direction, built on the historical processuality of the changes operated by society and, consequently, for the professional category. Conservatism is a complex, historical phenomenon resulting from numerous social determinations. Its first expressions emerged after the context of the French Revolution, when the bourgeoisie came to power and denied its revolutionary character, becoming an eminently conservative class. The incidence of this phenomenon in the scope of Social Work occurred since its genesis, when the profession appeared to answer the State's requests, being referenced by the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. We infer, therefore, that conservatism permeated the entire theoretical-methodological trajectory, having the first attempts at questioning after the Social Service Renewal process in Brazil, through its last direction - the Rupturing Intention. The work developed here is based on the assumption that new expressions of conservatism challenge the hegemonic social direction, expressed in the professional ethical-political project, revealing new trends in the direction of the formation and work of social workers. The research is guided by the critical-dialectic method, since it allows to capture aspects of the object of study, unveiling its multiple determinations. As a source of data, we elected the annals of the National Meeting of Social Service Researchers (ENPESS), in the 2014, 2016 and 2018 editions, respectively. The choice of this empirical locus was due to the thematic diversity presented by the research subjects, as well as, for considering such emblematic periods with regard to the intensification of conservatism in different spheres of Brazilian society. The results pointed out in this work reveal that conservatism, according to the analyzed materials, has been revitalized through post-modern elaborations, which, in the perspective defended here, put into dispute the values recommended by PEPSS.
In addition, conservatism has gained ground in the scope of professional training, through proposals in the distance learning modality (EAD), making training susceptible to pragmatism and technicality. In professional practice, there is a risk of fragmented analyzes, of individual blaming of the subjects. There was consensus in the research carried out here that conservatism is presented as a dispute for the hegemonic social direction and that the discussions raised by the analyzed articles problematize it in a critical perspective.
