RESUMO:

The project presented here aims to analyze the cases of femicide motivated by jealousy in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN).  In our reflections, we will establish the relationship between patriarchy, male chauvinism and femicide in the contemporary scene of capitalism, understanding that the current social relations are structured in a system that articulates oppression, domination and exploitation of labor, based on gender and race, and that it has working women as the main victims.  Brazil ranks fifth in the international ranking among the countries where femicides are most committed, with a daily average of thirteen female deaths, according to the Map of Violence (2015). The RN is the state that kills most women in Brazil, according to the Atlas of Violence (2018), with a 138.1% increase in cases in recent years.  We defend that femicide should be reflected as a result or product of current social relations, that is, in the consubstantiality of the social relations of gender, race and class, which are structured in favor of the social production and reproduction of this sociability.  In this sense, femicide is the final moment or the highest degree of violence against women.  In view of this, we start with the following guiding question: what are the specificities of patriarchy in the Potiguar society that materializes in alarming numbers of femicides?  From this question, we are concerned about the explanation we can present for the increase in gender violence and the increase in cases of femicide in Brazil and, particularly, in the RN; for which reason there is an increase in the number of femicides, even with the existence of legislation that punishes the perpetrators; and who are the people who died because of this specific type of violence in recent years, whose alleged motivation for crime was the jealousy of their aggressor.  Our research is characterized as bibliographical-documentary and has at least four moments: a bibliographical survey of the topic approached; the collection of data in secondary sources such as the Atlas of Violence, the Violence Map and the primary data in cases reported by the newspaper Tribuna do Norte in the year of 2016; identification of those who have become criminal cases; and, finally, the analysis of the data.  The analysis of the data will take place in the form of documentary analysis and the method that guides our analysis is a historical-dialectical method.  Thus, our research shows itself as relevant, not only for the number of cases registered in the RN, but also for what this discussion represents for Social Work, for the Academics, for Feminists and Women's Movements, finally for the entire women´s working-class.
