RESUMO:

The present research seeks to broaden the debate on the social demands of the elderly in the scope of social assistance policy. For this, the social assistance services are problematized as important mechanisms in the scope of Brazilian social protection. The objective was to analyze the social assistance services of the Basic Social Protection of the social assistance for the elderly in Natal-RN, verifying how these services meet the demands of the elderly and elderly, considering the plurality in the ways of aging and its biopsychosocial dimension. The research was guided by the dialectical method, in the perspective of seeking an apprehension of reality that considers its contradictions. The empirical locus of the research were services of the social assistance network of the Basic Social Protection (PSB) of the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS), in Natal / RN. For the collection of primary data, a semi-structured interview was conducted with four professionals who work in said network. It was identified that the perspective of the preponderant aging in the social assistance services of the PSB is based on a biomedical conception - the aging centered on the losses of physical functionality -, making it necessary for the elderly person to occupy the time, keeping it in activity to provide the "Aging well", that is, active and healthy aging. The demands of the elderly and elderly are apprehended as the search for a particular service / activity, limiting a deeper understanding about the social needs of the elderly segment in the services surveyed. Under these bases, methodologies that focus on socio-cultural aspects, especially recreational and leisure activities, as well as functional physical activities, are favored. In this sense, the predominance of such activities in the scope of the services directed to the elderly person can be analyzed from three dimensions: 1) to a tradition incorporated to the services of social work in the work with the old and the elderly; 2) the north given by programs and proposals conceived by experts of the international and national gerontology; 3) the retraction of the functions of the State under the direction of neoliberal policies. These three dimensions find their intersection in aging, in which there is a need to solve the problem of aging in a superficial way, especially when working the physical and socio-cultural aspects.
