Numerical analysis of two pile caps with sockets embedded and shear keys
Embedded socket, shear keys, numerical analysis, two pile caps.
In this paper, three numerical models were analyzed in the ABAQUS® program: a monolithic reference two pile cap (M8) and two others two pile cap with embedded socket and shear keys (M13 and M14). The models were validated based on experimental tests. The results showed that the shear key provides rigid behavior to the pile cap with embedded socket, enabling load transfer through compression struts, although these are sensitive points with high stress concentrations in the models. The analyzes made it possible to understand the rupture mechanisms and indicated that pile caps with embedded socket are more susceptible to forming punching surfaces in the center of the block. Furthermore, there is rupture of the strut concrete in the socket region. Therefore, it can be concluded that the connection is the most critical point of this structure.
