SUMMARY:

Gilgals are characterized as micro-reliefs consisting of a succession of recesses and projections. These formations occur in different parts of the world, however, they are more common in arid and semi-arid environments, where there is a greater abundance of expansive clays (2:1) in the soils. Normally, these microreliefs are associated with Vertisols, considered as soils with temporary restriction to water percolation, with 30% or more clay along the profile, and which present a pronounced change in volume according to the variation in moisture content. Environments with occurrence of gilgais are important, as they have unique landscapes and these microreliefs influence the distribution and redistribution of water in the soil, and consequently interfere with the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties. Gilgais can also be indicators of preserved areas, since, normally, anthropic action, such as agricultural use, livestock, or the transmission of clays, generates direct impacts on these microreliefs, masking their presence. There are still few studies that address the genesis, morphology and processes associated with environments with gilgais, this gap is even greater when referring to the Brazilian semi-arid region. Thus, the objective of this work is to analyze the genesis and morphologies of gigal microreliefs in the Brazilian semi-arid region from a pedogeomorphological approach. The study area is the Seridó region, considered one of the Nuclei of Desertification in the Brazilian Semiarid Region. As a methodological procedure, morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical analyzes of the soils will be carried out. Soils will be classified according to the Brazilian Soil Classification System and according to the main International Systems (U.S. Soil Taxonomy and IUSS Working Group WRB). Morphometric analyzes of the gilgais will also be carried out, with in situ measurements and geomorphological mapping of the areas of occurrence and their morphologies. Satellite images will be used (ALOS-PALSAR and Google Earth) and images collected by UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). It is expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge regarding the genesis, transformation, and morphologies of Gilgal microreliefs. In this context, we seek to carry out scientific publications at national and international level, with the aim of helping to fill an existing gap regarding this intriguing knowledge and which still lacks more robust data, mainly through an integrated approach, associating soils with the highlight, as presented in the proposed methodological framework.
