SUMMARY:

The environmental impacts generated by the fragmentation of ecosystems are intensified in areas where
forest patches are compressed, giving way to human occupation, where the structure of the landscape
undergoes constant changes. This research has the general objective of evaluating the effect of
fragmentation on the provision of ecosystem services by the remnants in the municipality of Tabuleiro
Grande/RN (Northeast Brazil). As specific objectives, an analysis of the state of forest fragmentation was
carried out, identification of how the forest fragmentation process occurred in the area in the last 30 years,
as well as the identification of ecosystem services provided by the analyzed forest fragments. Finally, it is
also intended to evaluate the trade-offs between the evolution of land use and land cover and the reduction
of services provided by forest fragments in the area. The municipality is geologically located in the group of
Precambrian rocks, which are the oldest dating from 3.45 billion to 542 million years, in this sense it is
framed in the Jaguaribean complex which represents a geological unit of Paleoproterozoic origin. In terms
of relief form, Tabuleiro Grande is part of the Sertaneja Depression, with lowered areas in relation to the
surroundings, with flattened and slightly undulating surfaces with elevations that vary between 60 and 200
m, with shallow soils with natural fertility from high to low, with strong performance of physical
weathering. The method of approach that best suited the problem raised and the hypothesis conjectured was
the Hypothetical-Deductive method. For photographic registration and verification of the mappings already
made, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used for photographic registration and access to
inaccessible sectors of the massif. Then, to better understand the floristics of the phytophysiognomies,
analyzes of the floristic surveys were carried out. In order to understand the framework of the municipality
of Tabuleiro Grande within the scope of the classification of environments located in the sertaneja
depression, a series of mappings and survey of phytophysiognomic, floristic and pedological data will be
carried out. There was a predominance of vegetation of the Caatinga type, bushy and typical arboreal, on
soils of crystalline origin, being classified by the IBGE as “Stepical Savannah”, occurring especially in the
lowlands between mountains and plateaus.
