SUMMARY:

Planning and environmental management in the present are issues of a century of extreme tradition for society. The study of environmental vulnerability aims to indicate the potentialities and limitations of land use compared to human use and occupation and contribute to the understanding of the spatial reality with a view to settling the management and ordering of the territory. Historically, the Serra de Santana had its growth linked to the practice of agriculture, mainly fruit growing, and farming. In recent years, the increase in the installation of wind turbines and wind farms in the plateau, its spatial dynamics has undergone changes, especially with the advance of urbanization and real estate prospecting, leading to the degradation of native vegetation and changes in land use and cover. The present research aims at mapping and diagnosing the environmental vulnerability of the Serra de Santana, in the Seridó Potiguar of Rio Grande do Norte, from the elaboration of the mapping of land use and occupation, detailed physiographic survey and geosystemic analysis to the analysis of the environmental of the study area. For this, bibliographical research will be carried out with a theoretical-methodological basis; maps of land use and occupation being produced, to analyze the dynamics of the spatial distribution of land use and its influence on the influence of environmental vulnerability for the territory; in addition, thematic maps of Slope, Hipsometry, Relief Dissection Index (RDI), Vegetation, Pedology, Rainfall and mapping of Landscape Units will be prepared, which will subsequently be treated with map algebra for the elaboration of the environmental vulnerability map and production of the study area diagnosis. Thus, it is expected that this research can contribute to the understanding of its environmental dynamics and that it can direct a correct management and planning linked to the geoconservation of the territory.
