SUMMARY:

Geodiversity consists of the multiplicity of geological, geomorphological, pedological, hydrological elements and processes that gave rise to Planet Earth. It is through this variety of inanimate elements that the rocks, minerals, fossils and other surface deposits that give rise to landscapes and support life on earth will exist. However, the abiotic environment is in constant threat of degradation. Based on this, geologists and geomorphologists have focused their studies on the protection and conservation of geoheritage, especially in the context of geomorphological heritage through geoconservation. The geoheritage consists of a set of elements of exceptional value, subdivided into different categories of heritage with a specific focus on some areas, namely (geological heritage; geomorphological, hydrological, pedological, paleontological and others). However, the geomorphological heritage, object of this research, is characterized as a set of relief forms that are assigned some value (scientific and/or aesthetic, cultural, economic, functional and educational). In this way, this research will highlight the theoretical-methodological contributions regarding geodiversity, geomorphological heritage and geoconservation as the general objective to carry out a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the geomorphodiversity of the coastal zone of the municipalities of São Bento do Norte, Caiçara do Norte and Pedra Grande - RN. Chapter I presents a conceptual approach to the evolution of the concept of geodiversity throughout history; therefore, it addresses the category of geoheritage subdivided into other heritages that resulted in the valuation of geodiversity elements, portraying the geomorphological-geomorphositium heritage. In this way, this research highlights the reflections on the threats of this abiotic environment, in addition to using strategies to protect geodiversity and guarantee its natural evolution. The most suitable and viable possibilities of geoconservation addressing geotourism were also discussed. In chapter II, it consists of the natural history of the research area, listing the natural processes that conditioned the current features in the coastal zone of the municipality of São Bento do Norte, Caiçara do Norte and Pedra Grande. In chapter III, still under construction, it aims to carry out based on space-time analysis of the area with the application of the qualitative assessment of geomorphosites in the coastal zone of the aforementioned municipalities and finally, chapter IV referring to the quantitative evaluation of the geomorphosites.
