RESUMO:

Alasdair MacIntyre’s theory of the traditions of rational enquiry elaborates a metaphilosophical perspective from which one can evaluate the relative merits of rival frameworks of rationality within Philosophy in a way that resembles some canonical approaches in the philosophy of science, however such as to avoid as much the problems relating to the understanding of theoretic progress as the restrictions proper to relativist and perspectivist positions, so that it allows, on the one hand, a clear sight of the conditionings which operate on the investigation and, on the other, to assume a strictly realist posture anchored on a conception of truth as adequation of mind to reality. As a matter of fact, it finds itself associated to his defense of a “classical” understanding of philosophical reason, specifically an alignment to the ThomistAristotelian tradition. From this departure, through some adjustments, it is possible to consider casting a critical eye on some determinate commitments of modern philosophical rationality which lay ground for the establishment of analytic philosophy. Among the aspects of this tradition liable to a kind of “unmasking” by such a perspective as essentially problematic there are those that yield the difficulties faced by the analytic tradition in the task of defining its own identity, its indefinite understanding of the relations between logic and reason (as well as the very underlying conception of logic) and the manner of dealing with the theme of the mental. The development of the criticism, however, shall depend on the possibility of establishing a real confrontation of rationalities between the analytic and the Thomist-Aristotelian tradition, which offers support to MacIntyre’s theory. In order to do so it will be necessary to consider some of their effective points of contact and to contemplate the issue from a global view.
