SUMMARY:

It addresses the theme of collection development with a focus on evaluation and thinning processes. Rightly problematizes this theme the question of how to make the process of evaluating the thinning collection of the Zila Mamede Central Library more efficient aiming at a better management of the collection. It aims in general to improve the process of evaluation and thinning of the collections of informational materials of the Central Library Zila Mamede, where for this it is necessary to elucidate the policies of formation and development of collections of the federal university libraries of the northeast region, in order to know their evaluation, thinning and disposal processes; To analyze the process of evaluation and thinning of the “Policy of Formation and Development of Collections” of the Central Library Zila Mamede from the perspective of the panorama of the University Libraries of the Northeast; Propose a normative document that presents all the criteria pertinent to the evaluation, thinning and disposal, aiming at a more effective maintenance of the thinning collection. It discusses University Libraries and Information Management within these institutions. It addresses the issue of collection formation and development, its processes and applications. Regarding the methodological approach, a qualitative approach is predominantly presented, which can be classified as exploratory, using the inductive method. Ota as methodological procedures by bibliographic research, documental research. It makes a survey of all the normative documents about the Development of Collections available from the libraries of the Federal Universities of Brazil. Based on these documents, it reflects on viable ways to improve the evaluation and thinning process of the Zila Mamede Central Library.
