SUMMARY:

The constant growth in the production of information based on the implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has contributed to the increase in the demand for informational services, a demand that is often sought in a more judicious and demanding way by those who seek information within the context of university libraries. In general, working in university libraries requires as an essential characteristic to keep up to date on the services offered by the library, in addition to having technical knowledge to search, access, evaluate and transfer information in different supports and formats effectively and with quality for users. . In this scenario, the objective is to map the personal, professional and informational competences of the assistants of the Library System of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, seeking to align them in favor of competence- based management. Therefore, in the theoretical context, a literature review is presented with an emphasis on the university library as a unit providing information services, and library assistants as professionals providing information services, establishing a relationship between the essential processes relevant to the functionality of the libraries, with the work practices of these professionals. Based on the literature, management mechanisms by competence are also observed that help in the management and improvement of professional performance. The research methodology is characterized as exploratory research of the descriptive type, which will use as procedures the bibliographic research, documental research, field study, and a questionnaire intended for assistants and librarians who manage the libraries. For the analysis of the data collected in the research, statistical resources will be used as subsidies. Finally, with the information collected, it will be possible to judge mechanisms to enjoy, improve such skills, providing a better adaptation of employees to the work environment.
