RESUMO:

João Redondo’s puppet theater in Rio Grande do Norte/RN is a manifestation of popular culture, with its great concentration in the northeast of Brazil, which, through ages and by crossing different spaces, has built its own identity as well as dynamics where its codes and symbolic values are adjusted according to social contexts, elaborating itself within the so-called elements of tradition in dialogue with innovations. In this type of theater, puppets are used as a mirror of their manipulators who follows a structure during the play with improvisation of the speeches, music, dance, fast passages and typical characters. Like other manifestations of popular culture, João Redondo/RN’s puppet theater is in the process of transforming its practice and knowledge as it resists and adapts to modernity. This research aimed to understand João Redondo/RN’s puppet theater’s dynamics of practice and knowledge through the observation of three factors present in the process of constructing and remodeling João Redondo/RN’s puppet theater: the transmission, negotiation and circulation of its theater by its manipulators. The initial assumption is that João Redondo’s puppet theater is part of a process of spectacularization, according to the concept of José Jorge Carvalho, in which a manifestation of popular culture becomes a spectacle to be consumed by a group disconnected from its community of origin, without knowledge of their codes and unfamiliar with their senses. Among the several authors selected for the reflections of the collected data we can cite Beatriz Sarlo, Paul Zumthor and Stuart Hall. Participant observation was used with five manipulators as references for the research. The fieldwork also consisted of observing the RN puppets and their manipulator’s meetings, virtual media, audiences and contractors in order to understand the complex system in which the five manipulators studied in this research are inserted. The research is justified by the observation that the three factors may be acting in the way each manipulators build and elaborate their theater. It is hoped that this research will promote a greater understanding of the process of transformation of a manifestation of popular culture that keeps its traditions, but which is spectacular and can become another product.
