WIND ENERGY IN SCIENCE TEACHING: A STUDY ON THE MOBILIZATION OF CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

The state of Rio Grande do Norte stands out on the national stage for its high capacity of wind energy generation, which has driven the expansion of onshore wind farms, leading to sociocultural, economic, political, and environmental transformations in local communities. In this context, it is relevant to promote discussions in the educational sphere about these impacts. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate how a Socioscientific Issue (SSI) related to wind energy, integrated in a Teaching Sequence (TS), is able to mobilize Critical Thinking (CT) skills, even though it was not originally elaborated for that purpose. The research is characterized as qualitative, in form of a case study. The TS was applied to students from two third-year high school classes at a public state school in the city of Cruzeta, Rio Grande do Norte. The data was subjected to Bardin’s content analysis, utilizing a posteriori category. The TS was submitted to a theoretical framework based on the FA2IA approach developed by the Portuguese researchers Vieira and Tenreiro-Vieira to identify which capacities this teaching material evokes. The results show that the questionary presents potential to mobilize capacities related to focus on an issue to define terms, identified as emergent categories. The mock trial evidenced potential to mobilize capabilities associated with argument analysis, value judgements and decision-making, with the last one being highly noticed in one of the classes investigated.
