SUMMARY:

This research aims to investigate the simultaneous causal relationships between the political cycle, the quality of accounting information, financial health, and sporting performance in Brazilian football clubs. To this end, a quantitative approach is adopted by estimating a simultaneous equations system using Three-Stage Least Squares (3SLS). The sample comprises a data panel of 32 clubs participating in Series A and B of the Brazilian Championship, analyzed over a longitudinal period from 2012 to 2024, totaling 398 club-year observations. Econometric results indicate that political instability, characterized by electoral ruptures and changes in presidency, does not have a statistically significant direct impact on the level of earnings management as measured by discretionary accruals. On the other hand, it was evidenced that the magnitude of accounting opacity practices negatively affects the financial health of the organizations, categorically increasing the risk of institutional insolvency. Additionally, win maximization behavior was confirmed within the national sporting ecosystem, where the adoption of strictly conservative financial guidelines imposes a restriction that hinders the teams' performance in the competitive ranking. It is concluded that accounting manipulation and financial deterioration in the clubs are not mere byproducts of power transitions, but structural consequences of a model that systematically sacrifices long-term solvency in favor of immediate competitiveness on the field.
