SUMMARY:

Healthcare-Associated Infections are common adverse events in healthcare institutions, especially in Intensive Care Units, impacting patient safety and recovery. The National Health Surveillance Agency has highlighted the low adherence to protocols to prevent these infections, pointing to the urgent need to implement effective actions to improve compliance and guarantee better results for patient safety. Preventing damage and losses related to care resulting from failures in care processes and structures is a growing challenge at a global level. Implementing evidence-based infection prevention and control measures, such as bundles, current scientific research, is essential to reduce Healthcare-Associated Infections and improve the quality of care. Objective: Evaluate quality improvement in the implementation of an Improvement Cycle to increase the implementation of infection prevention protocols, in hospitals within the State Department of Public Health of Rio Grande do Norte's own network, with a focus on Intensive Care Units . Method: This action research, with a quasi-experimental before-and-after design, was approved by the Ethics Committee for Research with Human Beings (Opinion 6.413.818 and CAAE 73815823.4.0000.5292). The study aimed to evaluate protocols for preventing Primary Bloodstream Infection, associated with the use of Central Venous Catheters and preventing Pneumonia Associated with Mechanical Ventilation. Improvements to the protocols were planned based on an affinity diagram and Gantt diagram. Data collection took place before the planned improvement interventions and then after the execution of the actions between the years 2023 and 2024. Results: An absolute general improvement of 29.76% and a relative improvement of 44.64% was observed in the criteria evaluated for the implementation of infection prevention protocols in Intensive Care Units. It is evident that the findings show substantial improvements, especially in the implementation of the pneumonia protocol associated with mechanical ventilation with proven training for health professionals and in relation to care when removing the Central Venous Catheter, minimizing the risk of complications and contamination. t is noteworthy that the values reveal significant absolute increases. The proven training criterion on Pneumonia prevention associated with Mechanical Ventilation increased from 14.29% to 71.43%, an improvement of 57.14 percentage points, reflecting a significant advance in the construction of protocols and prioritization of professional training of health. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate a significant improvement in the implementation of infection prevention protocols, with emphasis on VAP prevention and proven training of health professionals. Regarding the analysis of non-conformities, based on the Pareto Diagram, a substantial reduction in compliance failures is revealed, highlighting the effectiveness of the corrective actions adopted. Furthermore, the data demonstrates consistent advances, with a positive impact on care and compliance with institutional protocols.
