IMPROVEMENT CYCLE FOR THE PROGRESSION OF FUNCTIONALITY PATIENTS ADMITTED TO THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Descriptors: Functionality; Intensive care unit; Quality Improvement; Quality of Health Care.
Introduction: The prolonged length of stay of patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) predisposes the incidence of complications arising from immobility, bringing rapid functional decline that may negatively impact the quality of life of the hospitalized individual, increasing care costs. Objective: Develop an improvement cycle to optimize mobility in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Methodology: This is a quasi-experimental, before-after study, without a control group, with a quantitative approach, to be carried out in a public hospital in Pernambuco through an improvement cycle with the following steps: identification and prioritization the opportunity for improvement through the application of the Nominal Group and Prioritization Matrix Techniques; carrying out a Cause and Effect Diagram to understand the potential causes related to this improvement opportunity; survey of quality criteria, totaling nine criteria, and they were analyzed and validated, so that they could be assessed whether or not they met the defined quality level; planning and implementation of possible intervention proposals, to later be reevaluated and compared. Results: This study made it possible to optimize functional mobility in patients admitted to the ICU after implementing good practices in an improvement cycle.
