Introduction: Shift handover is an important moment in the routine of health professionals, especially nurses, because effective communication is necessary for favorable outcomes in the comprehensive health care of individuals, as it involves the transfer of responsibilities and information necessary for the progress of the care plan and patient safety. In maternity wards, where the care of parturients and newborns requires high precision and constant vigilance, effective communication during shift handovers is essential to ensure continuity of care and patient safety. In this scenario, the intersectoral handover performed by the nurse is an important aspect of continuity and quality of care. This process involves communication and coordination between different sectors or health services, ensuring that the patient's needs are met in an integrated and uninterrupted manner. Objective: To develop and validate an instrument for effective communication of the intersectoral handover of the nurse in a maternity hospital in the Northeast of Brazil. Method: This is a methodological study to develop and validate an instrument for effective communication in the intersectoral transfer of nurses in a maternity hospital. The research will be carried out in stages: Improvement cycle; literature review; instrument construction; content and face validation of the instrument by experts in the field using the Delphi technique. The content validity index will be calculated for data analysis. Expected results: This study aims to develop a standardized instrument for the inter-sectoral transfer of patients admitted to a maternity hospital in the Northeast of Brazil, by nurses, and thereby achieve improvements in the quality of communication, since this can reduce adverse events, in addition to increasing the satisfaction of the nursing team, improving the quality of patient care and facilitating compliance with patient safety protocols.
