SUMMARY:

The rise of the Sharing Economy, driven by Industry 4.0 and the "platformization" of services, has significantly transformed the hospitality sector. Platforms like Airbnb generate billions globally, yet their impacts are still underexplored in developing countries. This study aimed to analyze the challenges and dilemmas of consumer relationships generated by Airbnb in Natal, Brazil, through the lens of Transformative Service Research (TSR). The research employed a mixed-methods case study approach, combining platform data extraction (scraping), interviews, and participant observation. The empirical analysis focused on four TSR domains: territorial, sociological, commercial, and institutional. The results indicate that Airbnb's presence in Natal raises complex dilemmas for the local ecosystem's sustainable development. Territorial implications include urban verticalization and real estate speculation, while commercial aspects involve job and income generation and the opening of new markets. From a social perspective, there are changes in the social dynamics of tourist neighborhoods and a risk of gentrification. Finally, institutional challenges encompass the need for regulation, the legality of short-term rental practices, and tax collection. In essence, this thesis contributes to the debate by characterizing Airbnb's impacts within a Brazilian context, highlighting the phenomenon's complexity for local development.
