AEROTROPOLIS OF THE NATAL METROPOLITAN REGION: AN ANALYSIS IN LIGHT OF JOHN D. KASARDA’S THEORY
Aerotropolis; Airport; Logistics; Economic development; Sustainability.
This study analyzed Natal International Airport through the lens of the aerotropolis construct proposed by John D. Kasarda and its related components. It is based on the premise that industrial competition increasingly occurs among supply chains rather than individual firms, which justifies Supply Chain Management as a strategic factor. In this context, the core of the aerotropolis concept lies in expanding industrial airport and airport city models, considering that, due to the growing importance of accessibility and intermodal connections for the agile flow of goods and people, geographic location tends to lose relevance in corporate decision-making. In 2024, the National Civil Aviation Agency completed the re-tendering of Natal International Airport, covering an area of more than 14 million square meters in São Gonçalo do Amarante, RN, transferring its management to Zurich Airport Brasil. This descriptive-exploratory research employed a qualitative approach through a single/combined case study, supported by bibliographic and documentary analysis in addition to interviews with experts and a local exporter. The results indicated that socioeconomic and demographic aspects, such as income levels and population, along with the characteristics of the local industry, interfere significantly with air connectivity. In addition to the need for more robust public policies aimed at attracting investment and promoting the production of sustainable aviation fuel. Although the aerotropolis construct is not yet fully realized, elements related to its components were identified that may contribute to the metropolitan region’s development and the future applicability of the construct. The findings of this study are relevant for supporting future research, particularly in developing a maturity scale for the aerotropolis.
