SUMMARY:

The introduction of modern agricultural practices has intensified competition, favoring large-scale producers with access to capital. While economies of scale offer advantages, their long-term sustainability is questionable due to rising costs outpacing gains, leading to profit compression and limiting technological investments (Ploeg, 2008). Simultaneously, global food insecurity highlights the need to ensure access to nutritious foods, particularly in territorial markets, which play a crucial role in selling fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products in low-income countries. However, these markets are often overlooked in national data collection systems (FAO, 2021). This research adopts a territorial approach to explore the sustainability of food systems by analyzing production, distribution, and consumption interactions on smaller scales. The study is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of New Economic Sociology (NES) and decoloniality to understand territorial markets as alternatives to corporate-controlled food distribution networks. These markets value local knowledge and empower small-scale producers. The study examines the structure of territorial agricultural markets in Rio Grande do Norte through the case of the Family Farming Market, utilizing the FAO (2021) questionnaire to map its dynamics. The hypothesis suggests that these markets serve as viable alternatives to conventional commercial practices, fostering sustainable development and socio-economic inclusion. Expected outcomes include identifying the structural characteristics of these markets, assessing their role in food security, and providing insights for more effective and inclusive public policies.
