SUMMARY:

In a global context of concern about climate change resulting from greenhouse gas emissions, the recent and significant increase in electric vehicle sales in Brazil has been seen as an example of sustainable development, both due to improvements in energy efficiency and the reduction of emissions. From this perspective, this study aimed to design a project for the electrification of the light vehicle fleet of UFRN’s central campus, with sizing based on real operational data from the fleet and with the premise of also providing a paid vehicle charging service to the external public, including an economic and financial feasibility assessment. This was an applied research study, beginning with a review of the current state of vehicle electrification technology. Next, data were collected on the university’s own light vehicle fleet, as well as on electricity consumption and generation at the central campus. Then, the differences in electricity pricing between the regulated and the free contracting environments were analyzed, from which research hypotheses and scenarios were developed. Subsequently, the portion of the fleet currently feasible and economically advantageous to electrify was determined, followed by the quantification and spatial stribution across the campus of the estimated required charging stations. Finally, the lanning and specification of the necessary infrastructure were carried out, followed by the economic and financial evaluation of the project. The results of the study culminated in the formulation of an effective proposal for the electrification of the light vehicle fleet of the central campus, with verified economic and financial feasibility. Therefore, as a practical contribution, this study is expected to support university management in potential decision-making regarding the adoption and dissemination of electromobility, both within its own fleet and throughout its community, in alignment with the emphasis placed on sustainability in UFRN’s mission and institutional principles.
