SUMMARY:

Introduction: There are significant gaps in knowledge and practices related to hospital oxygen therapy. Continuing education for healthcare professionals may promote the rational use of oxygen, reduce costs, and improve the quality of healthcare services. Contemporary educational models encourage the use of active learning methodologies in the training of healthcare professionals; however, studies investigating the application of these methodologies in oxygen therapy, especially in multiprofessional settings, remain scarce. Objectives: To assess the impact of a multifaceted strategy on promoting the rational use of oxygen and compressed air among students and healthcare professionals in a university hospital in Rio Grande do Norte. Method: A quasi experimental study conducted in three stages: (1) pre-intervention assessment (November 2024), including document analysis on Wiki HUOL, administration of an electronic questionnaire to assess training needs involving 36 professionals and students from the medical ward of a teaching hospital, and direct observation of the work process for 15 days; (2) educational intervention (February 2025), conducted in-service through face-to-face training on the rational use of oxygen and compressed air, delivered to nine groups totaling 44 participants, with an approximate duration of one hour. The activity was preceded by the administration of an electronic knowledge assessment questionnaire. Active teaching–learning methodologies were used during the intervention, including near-peer tutoring; and (3) post-intervention assessment, conducted immediately after the training, with re-administration of the knowledge questionnaire and observation of the work process for 15 days, beginning the day after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, comparing pre- and post-intervention stages. Results: The pre-intervention stages revealed the need to review institutional protocols, the absence of recent training for 63.9% of participants, and a preference for workplace-based training. Shortages of nebulization kits for compressed air were also observed, along with the need for coordination with managers, lack of specification of the driving gas in medical prescriptions, and inappropriate use of oxygen in situations requiring compressed air. After the intervention, there was a significant increase in professionals’ knowledge, with mean scores rising from 13 (SD = 3.55) to 17.7 (SD = 2.05), p < 0.001, along with improvements in the work process. Conclusions: The use of active teaching–learning methodologies facilitated learning and engagement in changes to the work process. Improvements were observed in knowledge on the topic, increased availability of previously scarce resources, adherence to the use of target oxygen saturation charts, and a reduction in the number of medical prescriptions for nebulization. The data reflect the reality of a specific hospital sector and cannot be generalized to all contexts. Standardization of routines, appropriate supervision, and training of healthcare professionals from other hospital sectors using the educational plan developed in this study may be effective strategies for sustaining the achieved results. Finally, longitudinal studies are recommended to assess long-term effects.
