SUMMARY:

This study aimed to propose the development of a manual of practices and protocols intended for residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology at Hospital Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel (HMWG), with the purpose of enhancing the knowledge, skills, and competencies of professionals in training. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach, employing documentary analysis as the guiding method to understand the organization of the service, patient care flows, and the practices developed in the polytrauma sector of HMWG/Clóvis Sarinho Emergency Department. Initially, an overview of the sector’s operation was presented, highlighting its relevance in the care of trauma victims and in the practical training of residents. Subsequently, the daily activities related to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology care were described, emphasizing the challenges and demands present in the hospital environment. Based on this analysis, the development of a manual aimed at systematizing practices, protocols, and technical guidelines was proposed, with the objective of contributing to the standardization of clinical conduct, strengthening biosafety principles, and improving the teaching-learning process. The manual is expected to function as a support tool for both residents and preceptors, facilitating the organization of the work process and improving the quality of care provided. Thus, the study highlights the importance of pedagogical and institutional instruments that strengthen the integration between teaching, service, and healthcare within the hospital setting and in the context of the Brazilian Unified Health System.
