SUMMARY:

This research investigates the teaching of the French horn in wind bands from the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte, aiming to understand how this pedagogical process occurs and how methodological proposals may contribute to its improvement, considering the historical, cultural, and structural specificities of this context. The study is based on the understanding that wind bands play an important role in the musical education of instrumentalists, especially in regions where access to formal music education is still limited. In the case of the French horn, however, challenges related to the absence of a consolidated pedagogical tradition for the instrument within these ensembles, the lack of specialized references, and the structural limitations of the investigated institutions were observed. The research adopts a qualitative approach, based on bibliographic review, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews conducted with band conductors working in the region. The theoretical framework dialogues with authors who discuss collective instrumental teaching, pedagogical practices in wind bands, and the technical foundations of French horn performance, addressing aspects such as posture, breathing, embouchure, tone production, articulation, flexibility, range, scales, and transposition. The results show that the teaching of the French horn in the Seridó bands occurs mainly through practices built from daily experience, oral tradition, and collective learning developed during rehearsals and performances. The research also identified methodological limitations related to the repertoire traditionally assigned to the horn in these ensembles, often restricted to harmonic functions and rhythmic accompaniment inherited from the old saxhorn tradition, reducing the possibilities for the student’s technical and musical development. Based on these analyses, the study proposes methodological guidelines aimed at strengthening technical fundamentals, bringing technical study closer to culturally meaningful repertoire, and promoting a pedagogical reformulation of horn parts within wind bands. It is concluded that improving French horn teaching in this context depends on the articulation between tradition, cultural reality, and the specialized technical development of the instrument.
