The Brazilian Association of Cellists (1965): a historical and performative reassessment of the cello in Brazil in the 20th century and its reverberations in the 21st century
Violoncelo, cello group, Brazilian Association of Cellists
The Brazilian Association of Cellists, founded in 1965, was essential to the development of the cello in Brazil. There is a gap in knowledge regarding the evolution of the technical repertoire of the instrument in the country, and up to the completion of this study, no comprehensive research narratives have been published that reveal how this evolution took place or where its point of departure was. This study aims to fill these gaps and to demonstrate how 21st-century brazilian’s cello ensembles were influenced by nearly 20 years of activities promoted by the Association. The research used interviews, newspaper, and consultations of public archives, among other sources, as data. As partial results, it is already possible to observe the great importance of the Association for the development of the brazilian cello tradition.
