SUMMARY:

This case study focused on the activities of the "03 de Dezembro" Philharmonic Band in four public schools in the municipality of Lajes/RN, aiming to understand its role as an educational, community, and cultural space. The main objective was to analyze the perspectives of school administrators and music instructors involved in the “The Band as a School” project, which integrates the philharmonic band's activities into four municipal schools. Based on interviews with the Municipal Secretary of Education and Culture, three music instructors, and the four school principals, both the institutional perspective and the pedagogical practices during rehearsals and workshops were analyzed. The Secretary emphasized the role of music in post-pandemic reintegration, the inter-institutional nature of the instructional activities, and the political strategies that ensured budget allocation and political support for the initiative. The principals mentioned that music is a powerful ally in boosting children’s self-esteem and emotional well-being, contributing to their holistic development. The instructors reported using a variety of methodologies: sound games and regional rhythms for active learning; co-creation of repertoire and visual codes for inclusion; and focused attention on student engagement. This blend of playfulness, co-authorship, and relational care creates a collaborative learning environment aligned with the concepts of school as a sociocultural space, local musical worlds, and creative pedagogies. It is concluded that the band, by integrating into the school curriculum, acts as an agent of cultural hybridization, democratization of music education, and strengthening of collective identities.
