Teaching Through the Etude: An Analysis of the Pedagogical Aspects Present in Estudo No. 1 by
the Potiguar Composer Waldemar de Almeida

This research aims to present and discuss the pedagogical aspects found in Estudo No. 1, a piano work
by the composer Waldemar de Almeida. In doing so, it also seeks to highlight the composer’s
biography, some of his artistic and pedagogical achievements within the cultural context of Rio
Grande do Norte, and, finally, to expose some of his technical and aesthetic principles through his own
words. The study intends to demonstrate how Almeida unified his artistic and educational pursuits and
how this fusion is manifested in his works, with particular emphasis on Estudo No. 1. Thus, the
research is built upon a contextual investigation — biographical, musicological, and pedagogical —
while also addressing, indirectly, the history of piano technique and how it was established in Rio
Grande do Norte through Almeida’s influence up to the present day.
