Júlio Braga (1918–1993), Pianist and Composer: A Biographical Study through His Performances and Piano Works
Júlio Braga; piano solo; cataloging; Choro Nº1 – Nostalgia.
The aim of this research is to provide a biography of the Pernambuco pianist and composer Júlio Braga, as
well as a proposal for cataloging his piano work, along with an overview with brief comments on each set
of pieces. It thus aims to re-dimension the importance of Júlio Braga in the Brazilian piano scene, serving
as an introduction to a character who composed around eighty pieces of music for solo piano. The
biography and survey of his work were the result of documentary research to trace his life trajectory,
highlighting the transition from his main role as a performer, inside and outside Brazil, to that of composer
in his final phase. In order to introduce the study of nationalism in his compositions, an analysis of Choro Nº1 - Nostalgia (1951) is presented from the choro genre based on the work of Almada (2006) and Almeida
(1999) complemented by the research of Milazzo and Carvalho (2004), and Oliveira (2017). Finally, an
edition of Choro Nº1 - Nostalgia and the performance are presented as products of this research.
