“FREE INSTRUMENTAL FREVO” FROM MULTIMODALITY: a feminine perspective on innovations in the compositional and interpretative process of frevo
Instrumental frevo. Free frevo. Women in frevo. Percussion. Multimodality.
Integrating the research line processes and dimensions of artistic production in percussion, this
dissertation presents the creation, interpretation, and analysis of an instrumental frevo, based
on the concept of multimodality and the feminine perspective of this researcher. As its main
objective, an instrumental frevo titled Passoando na Pracinha: Frevo for Percussion and Dance
in Three Movements—1. Ferrolho, 2. Levada, and 3. Tramela—was created, inspired by the
idea of multimodality. The work navigates between tradition and modernity, exploring a path
of creative freedom for modern composition while honoring the compositional tradition of
instrumental frevo. As specific objectives, the study involved performances of the piece in
various academic/artistic settings, audiovisual recordings of the performances, reflections on
the different interpretations presented in each performance, and documentation of the results
and conclusions derived from the analyses. The methodology applied to achieve these
objectives included the following steps: a literature review to gain a broader and more specific
understanding of the research topic; documentary research; audiovisual recordings of the
experiments and performances of the piece; analysis of the performances based on the
recordings; comparison of the performances; analysis of all collected materials; and
documentation of the results and conclusions. The research incorporated various elements, such
as exploring different instrumental formations for performance and integrating dance as part of
the composition. The researcher also reflects on her experiences as a woman in the realm of
instrumental frevo, composing, playing, conducting, teaching, and dancing.
