Saudade, Manhã, Tristesse de la Lune, and La Cloche Fêlée: Edition, interpretative analysis, and
performance resources for 4 songs by Ernani Braga (1888-1948)
Chamber music, Brazilian chamber song, interpretative analysis, edition, collection
This work contributes to the revival of four songs by the composer Ernani Braga (1888-1948) from the
state of Rio de Janeiro: "Saudade," "Manhã," "Tristesse de la Lune," and "La Cloche Fêlée." The sheet
music for these works is part of the digital collection of Hermelindo Castello Branco (1922-1996),
made available by the Brazilian Piano Institute (IPB). Widely recognized for his harmonizations of
Brazilian folk music, which gained international recognition, Ernani Braga belongs to the second
generation of nationalist composers. In addition to his famous cycle of northeastern songs, Braga
composed songs with texts by important Brazilian and foreign poets, such as Charles Baudelaire,
many of which remained unknown despite their evident artistic quality. With the aim of reviving the
performance of this repertoire, this research relied on historical musicology, utilizing techniques such
as bibliographic surveys, literature reviews, and documentary research on the composer, culminating
in an interpretive work focused on the performance of the four songs. Furthermore, this research is
eminently practical, including the transcription and editing of the sheet music for these four songs, as
well as the creation of transposed versions, aimed at facilitating the performance of this repertoire and
offering a modern edition that accommodates varied vocal ranges. The work also provides an
interpretative analysis of the pieces, with an emphasis on creating interpretative resources that can
assist singers and pianists interested in performing these four songs.
