Saudade, Manha, Tristesse de la Lune, and La Cloche Felee: Edition, Interpretative Analysis, and
Performance Resources for Four Songs by Ernani Braga"
Chamber Music, Brazilian Art Song, Ernani Braga, Edition, Interpretative Analysis,
Autoethnography
This work is a contribution to the revival of four songs by the Rio de Janeiro-born composer Ernani
Braga (1888-1948): "Saudade," "Manha," "Tristesse de la Lune," and "La Cloche Felee." The scores
for these pieces are part of the digital collection of Hermelindo Castello Branco (1922-1996), made
available by the Instituto Piano Brasileiro (IPB). Widely recognized for his harmonizations of
Brazilian folk music, which achieved international acclaim, Ernani Braga belongs to the second
generation of nationalist composers. In addition to his famous cycle of northeastern songs, Braga
composed works with texts by prominent Brazilian and foreign poets, such as Charles Baudelaire,
many of which have remained obscure despite their evident artistic quality. To revive the performance
of this repertoire, this research drew upon historical musicology, employing techniques such as
bibliographic surveys, literature reviews, and documentary research on the composer. This process
culminated in an interpretive, autoethnographic study focused on the performance of these four songs.
Furthermore, the research has an eminently practical focus, including the transcription and editing of
the scores for these songs, as well as the creation of transposed versions. The aim is to facilitate the
performance of this repertoire and to provide a modern edition that accommodates various vocal
ranges. The work also offers an interpretive analysis of the pieces, emphasizing the development of
interpretive tools to assist singers and pianists interested in performing these four songs.
