SUMMARY:

The dissertation aims to explore significant aspects of didactics in the teaching of musical
arrangement, highlighting the relevance of this topic for performers working within the context
of a chamber group, specifically the Big Band. It is recognized that the language and
mannerisms of the Big Band are perceived distinctly in performance practice. Therefore, the
study will cover both the historical aspects of the creation of this type of group and technical
issues on how to write for a specific section, in this case, the trombone section. Thus, the
work will serve as a basis for the musical arranger and the trombonist performer who are
interested in understanding writing for this section. This work investigated the technical and
musical development in the elaboration of arrangements, with an emphasis on the trombone
within the universe of Banda Pequi, a Brazilian music orchestra. For the foundation, the
research employed a qualitative methodology and used data obtained from bibliographic
review and semi-structured interviews with musician composers and arrangers to elucidate
whether there is a theoretical or practical use for the employment of the instrument within the
arrangement. Therefore, the study will cover both the historical aspects of the creation of this
type of group and technical issues on how to write for a specific section, in this case, the
trombone section. Thus, the work will serve as a basis for the musical arranger and the trombonist performer who are interested in understanding writing for this section. Finally, it is recognized that the language and mannerisms of the Big Band are perceived distinctly in performance practice.
