networks of care for riverside residents engaged in student mobility in the city

SUMMARY:

This study focuses on a cartographic analysis of riverside students who migrated to the city of
Manaus, Amazonas, with the aim of accessing higher education. Thus, the objective was to map the
trajectories and living networks of care present in the migration experiences of college students who
moved from riverside communities in the state of Amazonas to pursue undergraduate studies in
Manaus. The categories of analysis in this study include territory, student migration, riverside ways
of life, the city, living networks, access to, support for, and student retention in higher education,
and cartography. This is an intervention-based research study using the cartographic method from a
qualitative approach. The research is being conducted in the city of Manaus, Amazonas, with the
Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) serving as the site from which the three student guides for
the research emerged. The cartographic method comprised tools such as user guides, cartographic

interviews, talking maps, informal conversations, walks, photographic records, narrative
construction, participant observation, consultations of secondary sources, and a cartographic and
meeting diary, constituting a rhizomatic toolkit for research. Throughout the mapping process, the
information produced was organized, transcribed, and analyzed to bring forth the Visibility Plans and
their discussed analytical frameworks. For this Qualifying Exam, we discussed the Plan regarding
students’ riverside ways of life and experiences in the space between the liquid territory and the city.
As we examined this Plan, analytical frameworks emerged that sought to problematize, create points
of tension, and stimulate and expand our thinking, namely: a) the weakening and hollowing out of
collective ways of inhabiting the city; b) the stabilities and uncertainties of riverside and urban living;
c) living with greater freedom in riverside communities and homes compared to the more confining
nature of city life; d) riverside and urban ways of feeding oneself, ranging from abundance to hunger;
f) the meanings of the rivers of life. With this Plan and these analytical tools, we aim to shed light on
subjective lines and ways of life that inhabit the space between the fluid territory and the city, the
flows of connection between students and their ways of existing and inhabiting the city, the break
with institutional norms, among other aspects that may emerge from the experiences of riverside
students in migration—experiences that are often not visible, are left out, go unnoticed, are rendered
invisible, or are undervalued within university spaces. Among its contributions, this research focuses
on the migratory processes of students from traditional communities who leave their territories to
access education in the city, on mapping the living care networks of these students in transit, and,
above all, on the self-narratives of riverside student guides regarding migrating to pursue education
and developing themselves through migration.
