SUMMARY:

Aquatic fungi complete at least part of their life cycle in aquatic environments, sporulating both below and above the water. They are mostly reported to belong to the phylum Ascomycota, with the class Dothideomycetes being one of the most diverse within the phylum. Despite knowledge of the taxonomy of aquatic dothideomycetes and recent work related to this class, the distribution of these fungi is still unclear. These organisms make organic matter more nutritious and palatable for other decomposer organisms, being important in nutrient cycling in aquatic environments. The aquatic ecosystems of the Amazon are characterized by high biodiversity and endemism potential, containing the largest genetic bank among all ecosystems on the planet. Considering this, the present project aims to carry out a taxonomic, phylogenetic, and ecological study of aquatic Dothideomycetes species associated with the decomposition of submerged plant substrates in streams of the southern Amazon, contributing to the knowledge of the fungi of this biome. To this end, five quarterly collections of submerged foliolous and lignicolous substrates (10 of each) will be carried out, starting in September 2023, in a stream belonging to the Xingu State Park and another to the Rio Negro Farm. The submerged substrates will be subjected to the humid-chamber method and observed for 30 days. Morphological, multigene, and ecological analyses of the Dothideomycetes found will be performed. Visits to herbaria will be made to analyze specimens of Amazonian dothideomycetes. With this work, it is expected to find high diversity of aquatic Dothideomycetes from southern Amazonia, and possible new species and records for Brazil and science; as well as carrying out ecological analyses to observe if there is a difference between substrates and areas studied. It is also expected to support future studies involving the conservation of these areas.
