SUMMARY:

This study examines the situation of former prisoners from the Rio Grande do Norte prison system who receive assistance from the Escritório Social. A former prisoners is defined as someone who has spent time in prison and has been released either permanently – within one year of leaving prison – or on parole. The Escritório Social is a public institution jointly managed by the Judicial and Executive Branches, responsible for receiving, guiding, and referring ex-prisoners and their families to existing public policies. The central objective was to analyze the life trajectories of ex-prisoners from the Rio Grande do Norte prison system assisted by the Escritório Social of Natal, considering the effects of this support institution during the post-prison phase. The study also sought to examine the profile of the assisted population; investigate the relationship between former prisoners and factors such as stigma and family, work, religion, and social networks; and assess how the work of the Escritório Social of Natal affects the reduction of criminal recidivism. The research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with the Escritório Social technical staff, in-depth interviews with former prisoners and their families, participant observation, and analysis of institutional documents. The results show that the primary need expressed by users is entry into the labor market; however, the stigma of incarceration, low educational attainment, limited professional qualifications, and a scarcity of opportunities significantly hinder social reintegration. The predominant profile of the assisted population consists of young men, black or mixed-race, with low educational attainment, at least one child, unemployed, and often wearing an electronic ankle monitor. Regarding criminal recidivism, it was not possible to establish a sufficient quantitative basis to accurately measure the impact of the Escritório Social. Nevertheless, qualitative evidence suggests that access to documentation, the strengthening of family ties, opportunities for education and/or work, and psychosocial support increase the likelihood of remaining free. It is concluded that incarceration does not end with release from prison but persists in social relationships and in the conditions for rebuilding a life in freedom.
