Urban climate refers to modifications in local atmospheric conditions resulting from changes
imposed on the natural environment by cities, affecting variables such as temperature, humidity,
wind, and the surface energy balance. In coastal tropical cities, like Natal-RN, these alterations
combine with the action of the trade winds and high humidity, resulting in a particular atmospheric
dynamic that involves both the formation of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) and changes in the
structure of the Urban Boundary Layer (UBL).Despite advances in the study of surface temperature
in Natal, investigations that integrate horizontal and vertical analyses of the atmosphere are still
scarce, especially concerning the structure and height of the Urban Boundary Layer. Given this
scenario, this thesis aims to characterize the urban micrometeorology of Natal-RN, focusing on the
processes that determine the dynamics of the Urban Boundary Layer and the surface thermal
variability.To achieve this, the study integrates three complementary data bases: mobile transects,
used to analyze the thermal behavior at the surface; radiosoundings, applied to identify the vertical
structure of the atmosphere; and ERA5 reanalysis data, employed as temporal support and for
estimating the Urban Boundary Layer height during periods without in situ observations.This
integrated approach allows for an advance in the understanding of the processes that determine the
structure and thermal variability of Natal, offering a consistent technical-scientific basis for climate
diagnoses and for urban planning oriented toward mitigating warming in coastal tropical cities.
