SUMMARY:

In various parts of the world, water availability in quantitative and qualitative terms is under constant threat in the face of changes imposed by human activity and the occurrence of extreme phenomena. In Brazil, although the national territory has 11% of the world's freshwater resources, constant water crises plague basins and hydrographic regions subject to high temperatures, high evaporation rates, scarcity of rainfall and changes in land use and occupation. Consequently, the association of the factors mentioned has made water management quite complex in some hydrographic units. Thus, it is intended to evaluate in general the water security in the hydrographic sub-basins contained in the hydrographic region of the Eastern Northeast Atlantic. In addition, specifically estimate the availability and water demands in sub-regions of greater water vulnerability and simulate future scenarios of the relationship between supply, demand and land use. For this purpose, information from the demographic census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics will be used to estimate water demands in the sub-basins, while precipitation and temperature data from the National Institute of Meteorology and flow from the National Water Agency will be used to assess water availability. Then, land use and occupation data from the MapBiomas Portal will support the analyses about land use and occupation. In the methodology, it is instigated to guide the development of this work from the following points: (i) Standarized Precipitation Index in order to obtain the periods of hydrological drought, (ii) Generalized Pareto distribution in order to verify the estimated return periods of precipitation and flow (ii) Soil and Water Assessment Model in order to predict sediment transport in the sub-basins, (iii) and Geographic Information System in order to promote the overlap of images and information , in addition to performing calibration operations, subdivision of the hydrographic region and simulation of future projections together with the hydrological model. Based on the use of these methodologies, hydrographic units in water stress were preliminary detected, as well as the return periods for precipitation and flow events of these units in question. The water and socio-environmental diagnosis of one of these indicated that the qualitative and quantitative availability of water may be suffering more and more external interference. Finally, it is expected to obtain scenarios of the near future and distant from the relationship between supply, demand and land use.
