IDENTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT OF FLOODING POINTS SUPPORTED BY GEOTECHNOLOGIES IN THE PETRÓPOLIS AND RIBEIRA NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE CITY OF NATAL/RN
Urban flooding, Geoprocessing, DEM, DSM, Northeast Brazil.
Urban flooding has become frequent in Brazilian cities due to soil sealing caused by urbanization of cities, the occurrence of extreme precipitation events and the existence of failures in the urban drainage system. In the city of Natal, several neighborhoods have floodable points that cause various damages, among these neighborhoods are Ribeira and Petrópolis. Thus, this study aims to identify and evaluate areas susceptible to flooding in the neighborhoods of Petrópolis and Ribeira in the city of Natal and to propose engineering solutions for flooding in this study area. For this, data were provided by public agencies, such as: topographic data, orthophotos and urban drainage system map, and from these data, using geoprocessing techniques and through a Geographic Information System (GIS), it was possible to identify topographic lows, surface flow identification. These data coupled with the historical flooding data and the drainage network of the area it was possible to identify the most susceptible areas to flooding. The results showed twelve topographic lows, among these, only three that have no historical flood occurrence also reported in newspapers. It was also possible to identify that there is also a lot of flow confluence and in most of them the drainage system is inefficient, therefore, these areas are susceptible to urban flooding.
