SUMMARY:

The general objective of this project is to analyze the implications of managing the Geographical Indication (GI) for “Queijo de Manteiga” (butter cheese) from the Seridó region (Rio Grande do Norte) regarding production organization and the structuring of regional gastronomic tourism, aiming to inform planning and competitiveness strategies for the territory. Specific research objectives include: a) characterizing the process of obtaining GI registration; b) evaluating the GI's potential as a tool for tourism planning and management in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte; and c) creating a technical map of the region's cheese producers based on their tourism potential and competitiveness indicators. Methodologically, this is an applied social research project, descriptive-exploratory in nature, employing a qualitative approach with a case study as the central strategy. The theoretical framework is based on a systematic review of national and international scientific literature, a discussion of the Seridó region and tourism in Rio Grande do Norte, and the Stakeholder Theory approach; a conceptual model structured around four actor groups—producers, institutional bodies, tourism supply, and governance—is applied to analyze power dynamics and cooperation within the territory. Methodological procedures include documentary research to analyze the history, regulations, and progress of the certification process with the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property). Additionally, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with key stakeholders in the production and tourism sectors (producers associated with Amaqueijo, public officials, and support organizations), alongside a field assessment to map the cheese producers. Data interpretation and processing will be carried out using content analysis techniques. The expected outcome is to provide a broader understanding of the GI's role as an asset for territorial valorization and the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. The study aims to provide an assessment of the structural and sanitary limitations faced by local producers, as well as to propose strategic guidelines for the creation and organization of sustainable gastronomic tourism routes and products, fostering regional socioeconomic development in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.
