SUMMARY:

E-learning (online education) is recognized for offering flexibility in both time and investment for its users. In recent years, the modality has expanded, being increasingly adopted by educational institutions and tourism-related companies. In this context, the Ministry of Tourism (MTur) plays a relevant role in establishing public policies and/or programs aimed at professional qualification in the country. Therefore, this study analyzes the adoption of e-learning in professional qualification in the tourism sector, with an emphasis on the qualification initiatives offered by the Ministry of Tourism. The research is characterized as descriptive and exploratory and adopts a qualitative approach. A literature review was also conducted to assess the state of the art. Data collection included bibliographic and documentary research, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and secondary data. Qualitative data were analyzed and processed using Bardin's (1977) Content Analysis, which was conducted through dialogue with MTur managers and the coordinator of the Specialization and Extension courses in Responsible Tourism, offered in the e-learning format in partnership with UFRN. The results indicate that this modality presents itself as a relevant strategy for expanding access to training for people of different age groups and locations. The MTur offers professional qualification programs and platforms available to all tourism professionals and/or individuals interested in the field and/or topics covered. Despite this, access to digital platforms remains difficult, caused both by some individuals limited or almost complete familiarity with new digital technologies and by the lack of digital infrastructure. Despite these limitations, reports from participants in the aforementioned courses revealed a positive perception of the training proposal. Many participants highlighted, among other things, the facilitated access to knowledge and the flexibility provided by the modality. Finally, it is expected that the results presented will contribute to the debate on professional qualification through e-learning, promoting reflections and pointing out areas of improvement for the continuous enhancement of this type of education.
