SUMMARY:

Various social transformations have impacted historical and port zones in different historical contexts. As cities expanded towards new centralities, these areas underwent a process of depopulation of services, residents, and lived experiences. Certainly, since the implementation of neoliberal policy agendas in Brazil, these foundational spaces of coastal cities have become targets of public and private interventions aimed at reactivating and commercializing their landscapes, often with a focus on tourist use. Thus, this thesis aims to understand the constitution of the tourist field in the historical and port zone of Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, focusing on the reconfiguration of these spaces for tourist use, considering that the agents in the established field compete for the accumulation of specific capital and can direct and influence the perception of tourism development, particularly regarding the implementation of strategies that position tourism as a vector for reconfiguration. The methodology was divided into five stages: i) a bibliographic survey of articles, theses, dissertations, and books within the theoretical framework of the research; ii) delimitation of the research universe comprising public and private agents, tourists, and society; iii) construction of the research instrument and conducting semi-structured and open interviews; iv) collection of secondary data through documents, minutes, management reports, bulletins, and official information from institutions linked to the field; and v) the use of Bourdieu's theory of field, capital, and habitus as a guide for data analysis. It was identified that the tourist field was structured through the process of prioritizing tourist use in other areas of the city, leading to dominant agents monopolizing tourism practices and dominated agents finding ways to resist the absence of tourism in the historical and port zone. In the field, the contested capitals (economic, cultural, social, and tourist) were accumulated in processes of differentiation, where dominant agents—those with greater capital—controlled the decision-making process for tourist use, while dominated agents, with less capital, resisted by seeking to manifest other ways of mobilizing the zone based on their weakened experiences in the dispute. Although the narratives of dominant agents revealed a concern with the state of disrepair in the historical and port zone, their habitus perpetuated abandonment, generating a contrast between the internalization of subjectivities in the zone of practices and the externalization of subjectivities in the zone of disputes, imposing a logical structure of behavior on the tourist field, structured from their narratives. This context led to a natural process of distinction among subjects, highlighting how power dynamics and inequalities shaped the tourist field. The absence of integrated and participatory management further aggravated these distortions, highlighting the urgent need for more inclusive planning that values the contributions of all agents. The naturalization of differences among agents in the historical and port zone of Natal presented structural inequalities and incorporated the symbolic disputes that shape the tourist field. To overcome these barriers, it is essential to promote a more equitable redistribution of capitals and habitus, stimulate dialogue among different agents, and value the possibilities of new tourism practices.
