SUMMARY:

This study examines the Bacamarte culture (Blunderbuss in English) in Pernambuco, Brazil, from the perspective of its historical heritage and cultural tourism. The academic field of Tourism has, however, made little research concerning the scholarly knowledge production in relation to bacamarte, so far. This cultural manifestation is more than a shooting blast and it encompasses subjectivity, symbolism and emotions. It is simultaneously celebrated by playful men and women who belong to cultural groups and associations located in the 4 (four) macro- regions of Pernambuco, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, in Zona da Mata and in countryside regions such as Agreste and Sertao. The study aims to analyze the cultural manifestation of Bacamarte as a touristic attraction in process to become a cultural heritage in Pernambuco. For research purposes and to think about the immaterial and cultural heritage process of bacamarte in the State of Pernambuco, as well as the registration of the blunderbuss shooters (bacamarteiros) as members of the National Heritage Institute (IPHAN), it was necessary to organize field researches, activities and to schedule five meetings in the headquarters of the Bacamarteiros Association of Caruaru with the heads of the bacamarteiros groups, over the period from January 2022 to January 2024. The methodology constitutes an investigation focused on an exploratory perspective which acknowledges the technical procedures of a bibliographic, documental and active research considering case studies with a qualitative approach and oral history, besides semi-structured interviews which were conducted during field research. Results suggest that this study will provide evidence on how the bacamarte cultural manifestation can dialogue with the practices of tourism, by offering new perspectives to bacamarte as an Immaterial Cultural Heritage in Pernambuco. It is also expected from the study’s proposed goals and the defined methods to achieve them, to verify if the bacamarte - although belonging in the Touristic Calendar of Pernambuco - is effectively influenced by the benefits generated from the services and products that support tourism.
