SUMMARY:

Events permeated by faith are one of the main causes of human displacement around the world. These events, linked to a religious belief, are instruments for legitimising hospitality in today's society, since they influence and shape the behaviour of countless people. Religions emphasise hospitality, welcoming the other, the visitor, the foreigner and the vulnerable as an innate condition of their faithful. In Christianity, in particular, this hospitality is also a duty, and through its events it is one of the ways to bring them closer to the other. Specifically, since the Second Vatican Council (1961-65), the Catholic Church has opened its doors to the lay faithful to take on ministerial roles, found communities and help with evangelisation, with the emergence of the New Communities (NC) to bring it closer to the people through their daily activities and events. The aim is to analyse how hospitality at religious events with a tourist flow produces meaningful experiences. Phenomenology was used as a method to treat a multiple case study with descriptive and exploratory characteristics and a qualitative approach. From a universe of 29 NCs registered with the Archdiocese of Natal/RN, it was decided, based on pre- established criteria, to choose two and one event from each, determining the organisers, collaborators and participants as the research agents. Data collection was carried out through bibliographical and documentary research, participant observation, online data mining through the social network Instagram, interviews and focus groups using semi-structured scripts. Data analysis combined a description of the cases in chronological order with content analysis. This was aided by the Reshape software to transcribe the oral content in order to transform it into a corpus, submit it to Iramuteq and finally draw up the Idea Association Maps using MindMeister. For the online data mining analyses, the categories and criteria adapted from Alves et al (2022) were used to create the Narrative Lines via Pictorchart. The results were presented according to the experiences of each agent investigated in the stages of operationalising events. It is reported that organisers and collaborators are treated as servants. In the pre-event, hospitality shapes the experience of the servants based on the desire to prepare to welcome the other person in order to evangelise them, while that of the potential public is formed by expectation, fuelled by the spiritual aspect and information that will be exposed by the communities throughout this period. At the event, it was identified that, for the servants, the practice of hospitality is linked to offering material conditions to welcome the other unconditionally, while for the participants, it is about perceiving the actions of the event in its entirety. In the post-event period, the experience is realised as meaningful for the servants by aligning faith, human and material actions in order to welcome the other; and for the participants in the joint assimilation of what was offered. The conclusion is that the two logics of hospitality, the conditional/commercial and the unconditional, need to work together in order to achieve meaningful experiences at religious events. It is suggested that, as they have a tourist flow, an inventory should be made for cataloguing and dissemination to the trade in order to increase the range of attractions on offer and boost new styles of tourism.
