SUMMARY:

The growing process of transformation in tourism is causing concern and posing challenges to clay crafts due to their generational and traditional nature. This thesis investigates how clay culture, one of the most striking expressions of the cultural identity of the Moita Redonda community, Cascavel-CE, preserves the marks of the historical-social and affective process of its production without losing sight of the dynamics of the tourism market. Considering that the aforementioned community is not included in tourist routes and itineraries, the aim is to analyze the processes of “agency” of the actors involved in tourism activities, as well as to allude to marks of otherness and conflicts of cultural identity focused on by local artisans. It is understood that ancestral memories and local identities gain importance in the creation of new destinations, at the same time that communities begin to trigger changes in order to preserve and promote their culture through the guarantee of public policies, provoking questions about the symbolic boundaries between tradition and modernity. When used by individuals and groups to demarcate places of belonging, artisanal productions assume the status of narratives within the community, inserted in memory games and creating controversy with other representations arranged within the scope of commercial transactions. Therefore, the question is: How do memories and strategies of production and (re)production of artisanal objects molded in clay with traditional characteristics become (re)invented for a market eager for innovations? How do the artisanal productions of the Moita Redonda community appear in the regional and national tourism market? This is a case study with qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research, based on a bibliographic/documentary survey, semi- structured interviews with artisans, tourism agents and public managers.
