SUMMARY:

Human interest in places and attractions related to tragic events has been evident since ancient times, when people traveled to Roman cities with arenas to watch gladiator fights. In the postmodern era, tourism driven by these events has been denominated as Dark Tourism, which occurs when tourists visit places associated with death, pain, or suffering. This practice can stimulate the preservation and conservation of spaces with delicate heritage, educate tourists about historical events, and offer an intense emotional experience. However, its direct association with real tragedies raises ethical discussions about the practice of this tourism, as places where deaths and/or real tragedies occurred tend to be less socially accepted than places inspired by dark themes, but created for tourism purposes. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the interrelationships between ethical and social factors that may influence people to visit Dark Tourism destinations. To accomplish this, a preliminary structural model is proposed based on Dual-Process Theory (Greene, 2007) and Social Influence Theory (Deutsch & Gerard, 1955), which respectively observe ethical aspects and social factors. The proposed research is defined as hypothetical-deductive and adopts a qualitative-quantitative approach through the use of focus group, followed by Structural Equation Modeling. The expected outcomes are that, by adapting these two theories to the study's objective to the context of Dark Tourism, the ethical and social factors that can directly influence the intention to visit Dark Tourism destinations will be identified.
