SUMMARY:

Social invisibility is a problem that highlights inequalities and has affected society since the early days of civilization. However, it has only recently gained more intense debate. Despite globalization and technological advancement, political crises around the world have exacerbated inequalities. Tourism is also a social practice that for a long time carried an elitist connotation, but today there is growing discussion about social inclusion in its practice. The inclusion of people with disabilities in tourism activities is the focus of this study. This research analyzes the relationship between tourism and social invisibility, focusing on the accessibility infrastructure in tourist spaces, existing public policies, and the experiences of visually impaired people in Natal, RN. The objective of this research is to analyze the positive and negative aspects of accessibility infrastructure for visually impaired people in tourist spaces; to map the main public policies aimed at visually impaired people in tourist spaces; and to analyze the perceptions of visually impaired people regarding their inclusion and importance in the tourism scene. The methodological approach of this research included bibliographic research to support the study, documentary research on public policies, interviews with visually impaired people to understand their perceptions as tourists or leisure participants, and on-site observation of tourist locations such as the Ponta Negra beach promenade and the Forte dos Reis Magos. This study addressed the social invisibility of visually impaired people in tourism from the perspective of (inadequate) accessibility infrastructure in tourist spaces, (nonexistent or ineffective) public inclusion policies, and potential distortions in self-concept regarding their rights to inclusion. The research reveals that while issues related to infrastructure and tourism public policies are partially addressed in practice, distortions in self-concept were not observed in the groups interviewed. On the contrary, visually impaired people demonstrated a strong awareness of their rights, enabling them to critically assess the shortcomings in public policies and the infrastructure of tourist spaces in the city.
